Adam X is a Brooklyn-born techno pioneer whose influential career began in 1990, quickly establishing him as one of the most respected DJs and producers in the global underground techno scene. Alongside his brother and fellow pioneer Frankie Bones, he co-founded Groove Records in Brooklyn—America’s first dedicated underground techno record store—and helped organize NYC’s earliest techno events, including the legendary Storm Rave series launched in 1991, the East Coast’s first all-techno warehouse party that introduced many future cult figures of the genre. In 1995, the shop evolved into Sonic Groove in Manhattan, becoming both a store and record label that Adam continues to run with over one hundred releases spanning a wide spectrum of techno styles by established artists. Renowned for his uncompromising DJ and live performances, Adam played a central role in the rise of acid techno in the early 1990s and was instrumental in defining the industrial and EBM-techno crossover for much of the following two decades, before returning in recent years to a purist, hard-yet-deep techno sound that bridges past, present, and future. His impact extends through numerous side projects—including Traversable Wormhole, ADMX-71, The Secret Initiative, Mass-X-Odus, and X-Crashed—as well as collaborations with Perc (AX&P) and Maedon (Maedon-X on Tresor Records), and through releases on his own Sonic Groove imprint and seminal labels such as Wax Trax!, Peacefrog, Drop Bass Network, CLR, Hands Productions, and contemporary stalwarts including Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, L.I.E.S., Hospital Productions, and Pinkman.
